What is an FIBC bulk bag?
An FIBC — Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container, commonly called a bulk bag, super sack or tote bag — is a large fabric container woven from polypropylene that stores and transports dry, flowable solids. Integrated lift loops at the corners let a forklift or crane move a full bag, which can weigh up to two tons, in one motion. Compared with stacking dozens of 50-lb bags, an FIBC slashes handling time and labor.
When empty, bulk bags fold down to almost nothing and ship compressed in bales, so they are cheap to store and stock. They are the standard package for sand and aggregate, cement and minerals, grain and seed, plastic resin, fertilizer, and bulk chemicals.
Bag styles: U-panel, circular and baffle
Construction affects how the bag holds shape and stacks. A U-panel bag is built from one panel forming the bottom and two sides plus two end panels — strong and economical, the most common style. A circular (tubular) bag is woven as a continuous tube with two sewn panels, which distributes load evenly. A baffle (Q-bag) adds internal fabric baffles at the corners so the bag keeps a square shape when filled — maximizing pallet and container cube and improving stacking stability.

Fill and discharge options
How you fill and empty the bag drives the top and bottom configuration. Tops come as a fill spout (for automated filling), an open top (duffle), or a flat/closed top. Bottoms come as a discharge spout (for controlled emptying), a flat bottom (cut or dump to empty), or a full-discharge "diaper" bottom. Match these to your filling line and discharge station so loading and emptying stay fast and dust-controlled.
Safe Working Load and safety factor
Bulk bags are rated by Safe Working Load (SWL) — the maximum weight the bag is designed to carry — and a Safety Factor (SF), the ratio of breaking strength to SWL. A 5:1 safety factor is standard for bags that are filled and emptied a limited number of times (single-trip), while 6:1 is used for multi-trip bags that are reused. Always select a bag rated at or above your filled weight, and never exceed the SWL. We will confirm the SWL and safety factor for your application.
Food-grade and UN-rated bags
For edible products, food-grade FIBCs are made from virgin polypropylene under controlled, food-safe conditions and can include food-grade liners. For hazardous dry materials, UN-certified bulk bags are tested and marked for transporting dangerous goods.
