The short answer
Used Gaylord boxes are sorted into grades by condition and number of prior uses. Grade A is like-new (used once), Grade B is lightly used, Grade C is functional with visible wear, and Grade D is economy/mixed as-is. What the grades mean
When Gaylord boxes are recovered after use, they are inspected and sorted into standard grades. The grade describes condition and how many times the box has been used — not its strength, which is determined by wall construction. Lower letters are closer to new.

Wall count (ply) sets the strength
Grade and strength are two separate things. A clean Grade A box can be single-wall and a battered Grade C box can be triple-wall. Strength comes from how many layers of corrugated board form the wall — more walls mean a higher stacking strength and safe load.

How to choose the right grade and wall
Two questions decide it: does the box ship to a customer or stay in-house, and how heavy is the load?
- Shipping to customers or need it presentable → Grade A or B.
- In-house transfer, scrap or recycling → Grade C or economy/mixed.
- Light loads, single tier → single or double-wall.
- Heavy, dense or sharp loads, or stacking loaded boxes → triple-wall or 5-ply.
- Free-flowing material (resin, powder, grain) → choose an octabin for bulge resistance.
