What is an IBC tote?

An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote is a reusable industrial container that holds bulk liquids or flowable solids — bigger than a drum, smaller than a tank. The most common type is the caged composite IBC: a blow-molded HDPE plastic bottle inside a galvanized steel tubular cage, mounted on a pallet base with a discharge valve at the bottom and a fill cap on top.

IBCs are the standard way to move bulk liquid in 200–350 gallon quantities. One 275 gallon tote replaces roughly five 55-gallon drums, and because the base is a 48"×40" footprint, totes load two-per-pallet-position, stack when full, and handle with any forklift or pallet jack. They are used for everything from water and cleaners to oils, chemicals, food liquids and agricultural inputs.

275 vs. 330 gallon totes

The two standard sizes are 275 gallon (1,000 liter) and 330 gallon (1,250 liter). Both share the same 48"×40" footprint; the 330 is simply taller. The 275 is the most common and stacks/ships efficiently; the 330 carries more volume per pallet position, which lowers freight cost per gallon for compatible products. Choose based on your product density, total volume, and whether your fill/dispense equipment is set up for one or the other.

New, reconditioned, rebottled and food-grade

Condition is the most important — and most misunderstood — choice when buying IBC totes. The right grade depends entirely on what you are putting in the tote.

  • New / first-use totes: never filled, cleanest option, used for potable water, food, pharma and sensitive chemicals, and when you need a UN/DOT-rated container with full documentation.
  • Reconditioned (washed/rinsed): previously used totes that are emptied, triple-rinsed or detergent-washed, pressure-tested and re-certified. Far cheaper than new and ideal for non-food chemicals, cleaners and industrial liquids.
  • Rebottled: the original cage and pallet are reused but the inner HDPE bottle is replaced with a brand-new bottle — a clean interior at a lower price than a fully new tote.
  • Food-grade: totes with a documented food-safe history (or new bottles) suitable for edible and potable products; ask for prior-contents documentation.

Valves, fittings and caps

IBCs use standardized fittings, but they are not all identical — matching them to your pumps and hoses matters. The bottom discharge is typically a 2" butterfly or ball valve with an S60x6 (63mm) or camlock outlet; adapters convert between buttress, NPT, garden-hose and camlock connections. The top fill opening is usually a 6" cap, with breather/vented cap options for products that off-gas. Tell us your pump, hose and product and we will spec compatible valves and adapters.

UN/DOT ratings for regulated liquids

If you ship hazardous or regulated liquids, the tote must carry a valid UN marking (for example 31HA1 for a composite IBC) and be within its retest/recertification window. New and properly reconditioned totes can be UN/DOT-rated; we will confirm the marking, the manufacture date and the test date so your container is compliant for transport. For non-regulated liquids stored on-site, a standard reconditioned tote is usually all you need.

IBC Totes: frequently asked questions

How many gallons does an IBC tote hold?

The two standard sizes are 275 gallons (1,000 liters) and 330 gallons (1,250 liters). Both share a 48"×40" footprint; the 330 is taller. A 275 gallon tote replaces about five 55-gallon drums.

What is the difference between a reconditioned and a rebottled IBC tote?

A reconditioned tote is the original bottle cleaned (washed/rinsed), pressure-tested and recertified. A rebottled tote keeps the original cage and pallet but installs a brand-new HDPE bottle — giving you a clean interior at less than the cost of a fully new tote.

Are your IBC totes food-grade?

We stock food-grade totes — either new or with a documented food-safe prior-contents history. For edible or potable products, ask for food-grade specifically and we will provide documentation.

Can I ship hazardous liquids in an IBC tote?

Yes, in a tote with a valid UN marking (for example 31HA1) that is within its retest/recertification window. We confirm the marking, manufacture date and test date so your container is compliant for transport.

What size valve and fitting do IBC totes use?

Most use a 2" bottom discharge (butterfly or ball valve) with an S60x6 (63mm) or camlock outlet, and a 6" top fill cap. Adapters convert to NPT, camlock or garden-hose threads — tell us your pump and hose and we will match them.
